People pass through checkpoint with blankets and mattresses
In ten years Armenia has lost ten percent of its population which is a threatening figure for a small country like Armenia, demographer Ruben Yeganyan told reporters on May 29.
"On average, about 32 000 people leave Armenia every year," he said adding that the volume of immigration has grown in recent years.
According to the National Statistical Service, passenger turnover was 22 000 people in 2008, 25 000 in 2009, 30 000 in 2010, 45 000 in 2011 and at least 40 000 in 2012.
"Among the main causes of migration people point out unemployment, inadequate wages, continually rising food prices as well as injustice," said Mr Yeganyan.
In his turn, former lawmaker Vardan Khachatryan said the Migration statistics greatly differs from the real picture.
"Several days ago I was in Baghratashen, a town in Tavush Province, on the border with the Georgia. I had never come across such a thing in my life: people were passing through the checkpoint on foot, carrying blankets and mattresses in their hands. I was really touched to see it," said Khachatryan.
