Two candidates were running for the position of Mayor of the enlarged Goris community. Head of Vorotan community Suren Ohanjanyan, who entered into competition with incumbent Mayor Vachagan Adunts, withdrew from the race several days later. Ohanjanyan says he made the decision himself. “Many say that I was forced to withdraw my candidacy but I decided that I am not ready to take up the post yet,” he told us on the phone. The former candidate says Adunts has work to finish and has given many promises, which he has not managed to keep. Suren Ohanjanyan has been heading Vorotan community since 2007. “Though I have worked as head of a community, Vorotan is a small community and cannot be compared with Goris, especially now when the powers of the new mayor will be enlarged as a result of the consolidation of communities,” he said adding that he will support Vachagan Adunts in the elections. On September 18, residents of Goris will go to the polls to vote for a new mayor. After the vote, it will be known whether they want Vachagan Adunts to head their community with ten other villages or not. Asked whether residents might boycott the elections, Mr. Ohanjanyan said, “No, people will participate in the elections but I cannot say how they will vote.”
