PACE President presents his position on Karabakh issue
President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Pedro Agramunt today met journalists covering the PACE spring session on April 18-22, A1+'s journalist reports from Starsbourg. Summing up the work of the Assembly, the PACE President said 'frozen conflicts are gradually escalating, threatening security and stability of EU member states and the entire Europe.' The latest flare-up in the Karabakh conflict can rapidly escalate into war. “We cannot allow this [to happen] and our duty, as parliamentarians, is to ease tensions, help conflicting sides talk to each other, restore confidence and return to a negotiating table,” he stressed. The PACE President reminded that earlier in the week he had held separate meetings with the heads of the Armenian and Azerbaijani delegations. “I called on them to avoid rhetoric which can only increase tensions. Although they have different positions, we should not stop our efforts as dialogue is our only tool in the given situation.” Pedro Agramunt expressed hope that tensions would be reduced at the next session.
