Armenian youth prefers trendy books
When TV and Internet came into use, books and newspapers seem to fall by the wayside. The information, for finding which once we had to browse through dozens of books, can be found on the Internet in few seconds. The grown-ups think that the young make use of that opportunity and don’t read books any more. Young people oppose; it isn’t true that paper books don’t attract them. Libraries also confirm the words of the young. Libraries never lack visitors. Young people visit libraries for different reasons. One part visits for preparing for exams, but there are also many young people, who come to choose fiction, “Everybody wants to read Remarque, Orwell, Márquez; they have become trendy books,” says Anahit Verdoyan, Head Librarian of Library after Avetik Isahakyan. By the way, Library after Avetik Isahakyan is more crowded than usual. They prepared surprise for their readers on the occasion of the Day of Presenting Books. The tradition of presenting books has become widespread in Armenia since 2008. The idea belongs to Levon Ananyan, former Chairman of the Writers Union of Armenia. The day wasn’t chosen by chance; February 19 marks the birthday of the Poet of all Armenians Hovhannes Tumanyan.
