Speaking at the National Assembly on October 26, opposition lawmaker Nikol Pashinyan reminded that about 50 lifer-termers went on a hunger strike to demand review of their life prison terms and prison conditions and many wrongly thought in Armenia that they wanted to be released. “Does life imprisonment mean a slow death? I suggest that we organize hearings to discuss the issue. The stance of the state should be clarified on some issues, considering, of course, the interests of victims,” Pashinyan said addressing NA Speaker Galust Sahakyan. The latter said members of the NA Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs also heard the question and it is within their powers to discuss the issue and find a solution. “I do promise to get information and to answer your question,” he added. Lawmakers of the Country of Law Party (OEK) spoke about voters’ participation in a referendum by presenting an identity card. They said the corresponding amendments create double standards and cast doubt on the results of the referendum from the very beginning. They proposed to organize discussions on the issue. Galust Sahakyan said discussions have been underway for more than a month. “You could have attended the meetings and proposal your solutions there.” A total of 500 000 citizens have ID cards in Armenia.
