“Turkey will confront its history”
Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan's address on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Armenian Genocide
"Dear compatriots,
Today marks the 97th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Turks. The goal of the perpetrators was to annihilate the Armenians through a cultural genocide and continue with the elimination of historical memory. Today, as we bow in memory of the innocent martyrs, we state that the perpetrators weren't successful. They weren't able to eliminate the Armenians, our identity and memory, deafen the voice of historical truth and silence those people and countries standing by the Armenian people's side for the sake of the victory of justice and ruling out the crimes against humanity.
There are still Armenian Genocide survivors living in our country, and with them we mourn the memory of our ancestors with the certainty that sooner or later Turkey will confront its history and that an adequate evaluation of that monstrous crime will be given. Commemorating the victims of the genocide, we realize that only through our existence can we overcome the tremendous pain of the Great Genocide. It is our duty to move toward the future by shaping our statehood and creating a future that will be worth waiting for."
