Earthquake causes no threat to plant
"We at the nuclear power plant didn't feel the earthquake that took place in Van," chief engineer at Metsamor nuclear power plant Movses Vardanyan said today.
Vardanyan is not a seismologist, but is aware of the calculations for the construction of the nuclear power plant at the site where it is currently located.
"It is a high mountain with basalt. There was a time when people said there was a crack in that mountain and that the reactor was on that crack. We evaluated and found that there was no such crack," the chief engineer says.
According to the expert, the state of the nuclear power plant ensures that the entire Ararat Valley is far from the waters.
"The churches in Etchmiadzin have remained standing to this day. Doesn't that mean something to you? There have been earthquakes in nearby Igdir and Dvin, but the Mother See of Etchmiadzin has remained standing since 301," chief engineer Movses Vardanyan said as he consoled journalists.
