ARE REGISTERS OF VOTERS IMPORTANT?

Politics

Head of the National Concord party Aram Harutyunyan affirms that «all the democratic countries are alike while undemocratic countries become unhappy due to different reasons». In Armenia the Election Code played a great role in this issue.

In Harutyunyan’s opinion in the conduction of democratic elections the election committees are featured. «When the committee is bad, problems arouse and become the instrument of falsifications». According to Harutyunyan the compiling of the lists should be transparent to the society, they should be hanged at the walls of the election committee office for the people to see them. Head of the National Concord party does not object if political forces will have possibility to get familiarized with the process. «Not the lists but the committee members affect the outcomes of the elections and they can be considered terrorists if they falsify the results», he says.

Head of Democratic Homeland, another democratic party not represented in the parliament, Petros Makeyan considers that that the changes suggested for the register of voters maintain positive aspects, however with certain reservations. “The problem lies in those, who compiles this registers. I comprehend that with the incumbent leadership no progress can be expected». Mr. Makeyan is convinced that even if he Election Code has faults the authorities can succeed in organizing fair elections. «In classical democratic state the registers of voters can really play great role, but in our country they are not of utmost importance”, he noted.

Makeyan is concerned over the assurances of the leadership that the next elections will be more democratic. “They are paving the way for new falsifications by blunting the vigilance of international observers, our society and the political forces”, he resumes. By Lena Badeyan
