ARMENIAN LAWMAKERS PREFER CLOSED-DOOR VOTING

Politics

On Friday Armenian National Assembly’s session room was crowded as never before. 109 from 131 MPs were present at Friday’s session. Armenian lawmakers gathered to sustain or decline the idea of sending troops to Iraq.

Under the memorandum signed by 20 countries in Poland Armenia has to dispatch a 50-person military group to Iraq.

At the very beginning of the session speaker Arthur Baghdasaryan proposed to vote behind closed doors.

Opposition MP Victor Dallakyan objected saying a closed-door voting is being proposed for fear of revealing who is who in parliament.

Dallakyan thinks it would be better to record and show voting on television.

It became clear after voting on both proposals that majority of MPs supported Baghdasaryan’s proposal.

Immediately after that the opposition legislators left the session room.

It isn’t clear yet whether Artarutyun opposition fraction will take part in voting on the memorandum at 14:00. The head of the fraction Stepan Demirchyan thinks the opposition is likely to vote.
