LANDMINES PROBLEM IS UNDER DISCUSSION
Support A1+!Today, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is organising a round table for journalists, entitled “Landmines; Nairobi Summit on a Mine Free World”. The round table is dedicated to the First Review Conference of the Convention on the Prohibition of Anti-personnel Mines, also referred to as the Ottawa Convention, which will take place in the Kenyan capital Nairobi from 29 November to 3 December 2004.
About 30 media representatives are invited to the Congress Hotel for a briefing and discussion on the role of media in exposing the damages of mines, as well as mobilising the international community to respond.
The ICRC Mine Action Advisor for the Caucasus, who is leading the Round Table, will also elaborate on the importance of the Nairobi Summit. The aim of the Summit is to review the achievements of the Convention in the past five years, since its entry into force in 1999. Over 180 states, as well as the ICRC, participate in the Summit.
The Ottawa Convention is a part of the International Humanitarian Law. As such, the ICRC encourages the states to ratify this treaty.
