HAYRIKYAN INTENDS TO HOLD NEWS CONFERENCES MORE OFTEN

Politics

National Self-determination Union leader Parutr Hayrikyan convened a news conference on Friday to mark 17th anniversary of Ankakhutyun /Independence/, the first independent newspaper in Armenia.

The newspaper was launched amid Soviet-era widespread oppression, when those pronouncing independence word underwent harassment from the authorities, Hayrikyan said speaking at the news conference.

He was unhappy about the fact that the first independent newspaper wasn’t mentioned by media outlets on the Press Day.

Hayrikyan, who once was Soviet-epoch political prisoner, said he will be out of Yerevan on Oct 30, the Soviet Union Political Prisoners Day, because he intends to leave for Tbilisi, Georgia, by the end of the month to attend an event focused on South Caucasus nations’ strategies. That’s why he is going to give a news conference a few days ahead of the date.

The former political prisoner said his Way of the Light book would be published and be on sale soon.

The union leader also voiced his discontent over “the fact that, as a rule, his words don’t reach due destination”. That’s why he decided to hold news conferences once in every three days, not once a week. He said it would let him express his view on all events.
