SHAVARSH KOCHARYAN SPEAKING ON UPCOMING PACE SESSION

Politics

The issue of Armenia’s CE commitments fulfilment will be heard at the PACE fall session to be held from October 4 to 8 in Strasbourg, France.

The report on Armenia is expected to be read up on October 8.

Armenian National Assembly member Shavarsh Kocharyan says it is to become clear soon what way of development Armenia will chose.

The MP attended PACE monitoring commission’s session in recent days in Paris.

He said he found the commission report not objective. The head of the commission Yerzhi Yaskernia always took biased stance favourable for Armenia’s authorities.

On Monday, Shavarsh Kocharyan, speaking at Pakagits club, criticized the report clause by clause.

For example, there is a statement in one of the provisions that those arrested for participation in rallies are released from custody and an end is put to the administrative arrests practice.

Shavarsh Kocharyan reminded that 13 people underwent administrative arrest after the rallies and contrary to the PACE 1374 resolution 9 of them weren’t released immediately: they served one third of their punishment in detention and were freed only after trial.

As an example of that Kocharyan singled out a sudden release of Edgar Arakelyan in a few days ahead of the commission session.

What for demand connecting with freedom of the media, the commission never once mentioned that point throughout the session.

Answering the question about democracy in the republic the lawmaker said the European Union views Armenia as a neighbor not its likely member. “Libya, Morocco, Algeria, Pakistan and others along with Armenia are reckoned among neighbors of widened Europe. That’s how Armenia’s democracy level is considered”, he said.

Shavarsh Kocharyan noticed that every time upon their returning from any PACE session Armenian leadership representatives try to prove that overseas Armenian opposition enjoys Azerbaijanis and Turks support. This time, as it was always, the officials didn’t break the mould, he said.

But this time the MP said he had to react to that ugly tradition as his patience is already run out.

Responding to Armenian parliament vice-speaker Tigran Torosyan’s allegation that Shavarsh Kocharyan was sitting next to Azeri MP Molazade and discussing with him their plans, the Armenian parliamentarian said Torosyan is believed doesn’t know how Molazade looks. “I was sitting between Finnish MP and Russian MP. I don’t know where Molazade was”, Kocharyan said.
