VENICE COMMISSION REPRESENTATIVES SPEAKING ON CONSTITUTIONAL REFORMS IN ARMENIA

Politics

“Commissions engaging in media-related issues are being set by National Assembly and Senate in Italy. President upholds the nominations with his signature”, Venice Commission member Bruno Nasimbe said at “Constitutional Reforms in Armenia” forum being held in Yerevan.

It was hard to him to point out the exact criteria Armenia’s Internet media to be guided by to ensure pluralism, but he is convinced that the commissions mustn’t be composed by the republic president.

Venice Commission expert Otten Masters, in his turn, payed attention to the president’s sweeping powers. In particular, he found it strange that three of the Central Election Commission members are being nominated by the president and the rest members by National Assembly and noted that none of nominated was an opposition representative.

Another member of the Venice Commission Latvian Alvars Eindzinsh said he found it irrelevant to the governing system executive bodies’ interference into justice system and expressed hope that Armenian legislators will take this remark into account in working out the bill.
