EUROPEAN GUESTS TAKE FREEDOM-OF-SPEECH PROBLEMS SERIOUSLY
Support A1+!The heads of the OSCE Yerevan Office delegations on democratic institutions and human rights and the OSCE PA, which are now in Yerevan, have met not only Armenian officials, but also chairs of a number of organisations, whose opinion concerning human rights protection in Armenia interests Europeans.
The head of Armenia’s Helsinki Association Avetik Ishkhanyan spoke on a concrete problem at today’s meeting.
Although both OSCE delegation’s members are well aware of the A1+ TV Company imbroglio, Avetic Ishkhanyan told them about latest development of A1+-related events in Radio and Television National Commission.
In his opinion, the A1+ is constantly being denied frequency because its newscasts, as they are objective, cover all events without exemptions and probably not in favour of the authorities.
Ishkhanyan also gave examples to prove his words. “Not a single channel covers a real course of elections… Nothing has been said about clashes and protest actions by the opposition on the day of President Kocharyan’s swearing ceremony… How visible is the company missing from air”, he said.
Guests, in turn, said they are in touch with all the facts and added that they take very seriously freedom-of-speech-related problems and are preparing to come up with a statement concerning A1+. The statement is planned to be a joint document of the OSCE member countries’ ambassadors.
