The deputy candidates nominated by the majority procedure can’t enjoy the gratis airtime on Public TV as the Electoral Code says nothing for such a case , Nune Hovhannissyan, the head of Legal Department of CEC, announced.

The guest of the “Elections - 2003” seminar arranged for Mass Media by Journalists’ Union, said CEC Chairman Artak Sahradyan can’t regulate the inequality because of Electoral Code.In other words, those proposed by the majority procedure won’t use the free of charge airtime,180 minutes , allowed for the ones nominated by proportional procedure.

They will probably use the system of paying airtime. Nune Hovhannissyan says CEC Chair can’t settle it either as a private sector itself fixes the tariff.

Journalists reacted to it strongly. But Mrs Hovhannissyan said it was an unhealthy point in the Electoral Code. She added those in majority group will have to spend a notable part of their pre-election funds on TV.
