SPECULATIONS OVER IRAQ

Politics

Aram Karapetyan, the Russian Federation State Security official, spoke on situation over Iraq and the war possible impact on Armenia at today’s briefing.

In his opinion, Iraqi Armenians are expected to flee the country. But Karapetyan thinks they will leave Iraq for Arab countries, not for Armenia. Asked why not for Armenia, he answered because of the republic possible isolation.

Aram Karapetyan approved the policy Armenia adopted on war in Iraq saying it would be cautious and restrained.

It means Armenia should rely on Russia. It should sign either economic or military cooperation agreement. Answering the question whether the U.S. will punish the republic for that, Karapetyan said “no”. “If, of course, the U.S. doesn’t attack Iran after Iraq”, he added. “If it happens, Armenia will find itself in hard economic and political situation”, Karapetyan said.
