The police officers who used violence against citizens at Liberty Square on December 31, 2015, must be brought to justice. “The video shows police officers giving sharp blows to other police officers, including Gegham Khachatryan. In another video, Gegham Khachatryan is being dragged away by his subordinates. He gets rid of them, comes up to the citizens and starts to hit them,” civil activist Gevorg Safaryan said in the courtroom on Tuesday. He demands that the Court of Appeals initiate a criminal case against the police officers. Safaryan was sentenced to two years in prison for an attempt to install a Christmas tree at Liberty Square. Gevorg Safaryan is charged with assaulting and hitting a police officer [Gegham Khachatryan] on December 31, 2015, during a scuffle when members of the New Armenia movement attempted to set up a Christmas tree in the square. “Gegham Khachatryan had personal animosity towards me. On the day of the incident he wrote on his Facebook page that he was going to Liberty Square to clear monkeys from the square,” Safaryan continued. The jailed activist had to sit throughout the court sitting because of the pain in his leg. “We do not know what treatment he [Gevorg] needs. We take medicine to him to alleviate the pain,” Gevorg’s mother, Shushan Berberyan said. The next hearing is slated for June 22.
