World Aviation and Cosmonautics Day is observed on April 12 every year. On 12 April 1961, Russian Yuri Gagarin pilot and cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel into space when he launched into orbit on the Vostok 3KA-3 spacecraft. Vostok 1 traveled around the Earth once, reaching a maximum height of 203 miles (327 kilometers). Gagarin’s 108-minute flight gave him a permanent place in the history books as the first man in space. Before Gagarin’s light, Laika became the first animal launched into orbit, paving the way for human spaceflight. Many attempts have been made to land on the moon ever since. NASA is on a journey to Mars, with a goal of sending humans to the Red Planet in the 2030s.
