The lawyer of Gevorg Safaryan, a member of the Founding Parliament movement charged with violence against a government representative, says the testimony of the police officers, who are involved in the case as witnesses, do not sound credible. “I remember that Gevorg hit Gegham Khachatryan, I do not remember anything else. I have a question here: could they give a different testimony? Could Gegham Khachatryan be made accountable based on their testimony?” lawyer Tigran Hayrapetyan said today. Gevorg Safaryan is charged with assaulting and hitting a police officer [Gegham Khachatryan] on December 31, 2015, during a scuffle when members of the New Armenia movement attempted to set up a Christmas tree in the square. “If the policemen’s testimony is true why didn’t Khachatryan go to hospital after the incident? It appears that Gegham Khachatryan and two other police officers were thinking for an hour how to get out of that shameful situation and resorted to this hypothesis,” the lawyer added. In his speech, Tigran Hayrapetyan said that the lawyer drew everyone’s attention to the fact that the investigative body did not present any evidence proving Safaryan’s guilt. The lawyer asked the court to make a fair decision. The next court hearing in the case of the activist is slated for January 16. Gevorg Safaryan will make a speech
