Rector of Yerevan State Medical University (YSMU) has tendered his resignation. Mikael Narimanyan resigned as Rector of YSMU today during a sitting of the YSMU Board of Trustees. Armen Muradyan, a former Health Minister of Armenia, was appointed Acting Rector. Elections will be held in 40 days. Talking to reporters at the University, Mikael Narimanyan said he is stepping down for personal reasons as he wants to work by profession. Narimanyan, a pulmonologist by profession, denied reports that he was leaving the post for his alledged involvement in a corruption scandal. One of the university’s security guards was arrested in connection with the scandal. He is accused of abusing his official position and interceding good grades for some students. Mikael Narimanyan was re-elected as Rector of Yerevan State Medical University in 2015. In reply to a journalist’s question whether he would entrust his life to Armen Muradyan, Mr. Narimanyan said, “God forbid, he is an urologist.”
