Tigran Hayrapetyan, the lawyer of activist Gevorg Safaryan, has filed a motion requesting release of his client. The lawyer claims that Safaryan cannot influence the course of investigation as all police officers had been questioned as witnesses in the case while all other witnesses are either in custody or wanted by the police. Tigran Hayrapetyan claims that Gevorg Safaryan has developed several diseases in the cell and cannot be kept in prison for a long time. The prosecutor objected to the motion. The judge is to publish his decision within an hour. Gevorg Safaryan, who is charged under Criminal Code Article 316.1(violence against a government representative), was detained during clashes between police and demonstrators in Yerevan’s Liberty Square on New Year’s Eve. Safaryan believes that the court will reject the motion.
