Karimov will announce his death 'personally'
The editor of Fergananews.com, an independent news site in Uzbekistan which is blocked in the country for unknown reasons, explains why authorities in his country make no announcement about the death of President Islam Karimov. The editor says Karimov became victim of his 27-year reign. During his 27 years at the helm, Karimov only created ‘a sham parliament’ and inactive laws, forgetting the fact that he is not immortal and will die one day. The editor also cites one of the most popular jokes spread on Facebook these days according to which no one in Uzbekistan can speak about the death of Islam Karimov unless he declares demise himself. Earlier on Friday, Uzbekistan’s Cabinet said in a statement that Karimov is ‘in critical condition,’ while opposition outlet Fergana news agency reported that work is going on in preparation for Karimov's funeral in his hometown of Samarkand, with part of the city centre cordoned off and the streets being cleaned.
