Wars are started by men. Women help the conflicting sides reach peace… Women in the Caucasus region have gathered in Yerevan to discuss measures to combat violence against women. “There are many conflicts in this region, and women’s role is significant in the preservation of regional peace,” said Gulnara Shahinia, Founding Chairperson of the Democracy Today NGO, UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery. Hostilities do not only end with the suspension of military operations but also with the start of rehabilitation programs. Women are subjected to different kinds of exploitation during wars and after them. Many know that peacekeeping forces often demonstrate inappropriate behavior towards women. One of the participants of the event has arrived from Russia. She is working with refugees and they are mostly Ukrainians. “Their condition is really critical, because most children heave diabetes and other health problems. This is our last chance to socialize and communicate with each other and raise the problems on the government level,” said Natalia Chuprunova.
