Republican Aragats Saghatelyan was elected head of Vayk community in Vayots Dzor marz (province) in Sunday’s early elections. The only candidate for the post received 1924 votes. Of the 5224 eligible voters, 2105 went to the polls. Seventy-two ballots were recognized invalid. The other candidate, nonpartisan Aleksan Simonyan, had withdrawn from the race. Harutyun Sargsyan, the former mayor of Vayk, was appointed governor of the marz last November to replace Edgar Ghazaryan who was appointed Armenia’s Ambassador to Poland.
