National Assembly ratifies EEU Treaty

Featured news Politics

The National Assembly has ratified the treaty on Armenia's accession to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU)  with a vote of 103-7.  There was one abstention. The move was greeted with loud applause. Armenian lawmakers had been discussing the question of the country’s membership in the Russian-led trade bloc for two days, with opposition deputies denouncing it as a grave threat to national independence. Opposition lawmakers Nikol Pashinyan and Edmon Marukyan, the Heritage faction including KHachatur Kokobelyan and Alexander Arzumanyan voted against the treaty. After the vote, the NA hall began to empty. In the meantime, Lilit Galstyan, a member of the Control Chamber presented last year's report of the Chamber. The hustle and bustle angered NA Speaker Galust Sahakyan who said loudly, “Do hurry up, if you are leaving the sitting hall, go out quickly!” Shortly afterwards, Sahakyan also left the hall.
