Which is the best opinion to terminate pregnancy?
The number of births would double in Armenia if mothers did not decide to terminate their pregnancy. The opinion was expressed by three specialists in Yerevan on January 23.
They could not give a unanimous reply whether an unwanted pregnancy should be interrupted or not. The specialists advised choosing the best possible option, preferably non-surgical interruption of pregnancy.
Medical abortion avoids a surgical procedure. The advantage of medical abortion is that fertility is restored in the same month, i.e. the woman can become pregnant in the same month," said Ruzanna Abrahamyan, head of the department of pathologic pregnancy at the Institute of Perinatology, Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Relying on the statistics, the specialists announced that frequently pregnancy is terminated because of grave social conditions and poor health state.
Asked whether medical abortion could affect the national security and birth rate, Director of Women's Rights Center Susanna Vardanyan said, "In terms of national security, this option is more applicable since it does not exclude future pregnancies."
By 2008, 17% of women in Armenia suffered infertility due to post-abortion complications and ignorance. Women frequently go to pharmacies, buy a random drug and stop pregnancy without consulting doctors.
"Unfortunately, a woman bought a cheaper drug from the pharmacy and swallowed it in large quantities in order to stop unwanted pregnancy. Then she felt dizzy and fell down, hitting her head on the bath. She was found dead in the bathroom," said Mrs. Vardanyan.
