Catholicos Karekin II meets jailed Armenian activist’s parents
In the course of a pontific visit to Georgia, Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II met with the parents of jailed Georgian-Armenian activist Vahagn Chakhalyan.
Karekin II told Chakhalyan's family that he had raised the issue of releasing the activist during his meeting with Georgian Patriarch Ilia II.
Georgian authorities sentenced Chakhalyan to 10 years' in prison in July 2008 on allegedly trumped-up charges. His trials were reportedly accompanied by breaches, pushing the court to bring false charges against the activist.
A petition signed by 1,200 Armenians of Javakhk was sent to Catholicos Karekin II asking to raise the issue during his meetings with Georgian spiritual and political leadership.
