WWF Armenia to protect bears
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) supports mitigation of "human-bear" conflict in southern regions of Armenia.
The frequent "visits" of brown bears to the orchards of Meghri, Syunik Marz, have inflicted serious damages on the locals.
Numerous cases of similar intrusions are reported worldwide, especially on the threshold of autumn harvesting. Armenia is not an exception. Wild bears have done great damages to the communities of Nrnadzor, Shvinadzor and Alvank eating the fruit and breaking the trees of the orchards.
Together with the representatives of "Arevik" National Park and local residents, WWF Armenia initiates night watch in the orchards. The program aims to ensure the security of brown bears registered in the Armenian Red Book, prevent their illegal hunting and save the communities from new damages.
