The low level of technology of the mining industry in the existing mines is causing severe harm to the surrounding environment and people's health, say members of the "Sardarapat" movement.

The movement's initiating group has issued a statement in which it argues that the elimination or burying of poisonous wastes that emerged during the exploitation of mines is uncontrollable in the stages of eliminating the effects during and after exploitation.

Severe damage has already been caused to the nature, people's health and territories near mining industry enterprises in Alaverdi, Akhtala, Kajaran and Drmbon. The lack of statistics on the real state of the surrounding environment and people's health and the needless confidentiality of information conceal the devastating situation.

In regard to the lack of confidence of the people in Zangezur, especially the possible exploitation of uranium mines, the "Sardarapat" movement's initiating group finds that implementing the programs will not only lead to a disaster in terms of ecology and healthcare, but also endanger Armenia's national security.

"The exploitation of the mines will compel the population of Zangezur to leave their native land in a short period of time.

By removing Armenians from Zangezur, we are creating conditions to implement the Turks' dream of not seeing any Armenians in Zangezur. Serving others and keeping power have become the sole purpose for the current regime. The authorities have the desire to gain profits and are ready to implement programs that don't emanate from the interests of the Armenian people and Armenia. We call on all concerned Armenians, political parties and non-governmental organizations to support the population of Zangezur and put an end to the programs aimed at exploiting the uranium mines in that territory," as stated in the statement.
