MEMORY TORCHES IN LION

Social

On April 23 117 torches were lit in memory of the Genocide victims in Lion. About 200 Armenians gathered together at the Turkish Embassy and walked along the central streets of Lion, assuring that history is never forgotten.

Grigor Chyurjian, a marcher, declared their demand towards Turkey to recognize the Armenian Genocide. 68 year-old Hovhannes Zheloyan expressed confidence that Turkey would not only recognize the Genocide but it would also compensate the crimes committed. 17 year-old Anna Gazanchian stated it was her duty to partake in the march though she was not sure Turkey would recognize the Armenian Genocide since “Nowadays no one acknowledges their mistake.”

Passers-by were interested in the march. It was the first time Lion witnessed a march with torches. The latter was organized by Dashnaktsutyun (Armenian Revolutionary Federation) “New Generation” Association. The march ended without unpleasant incidents. Dozens of police cars accompanied the marchers.

The marchers finally stopped at the memorial to the Genocide victims and with a moment of silence paid respect to the 1.5 million victims.

Today events dedicated to the Armenian Genocide will continue. Liturgy will be celebrated in Armenian Church. Mayor of Lion will make a speech at an event organized by the Armenian Community.
