PROTEST BROKE OUT IN YEREVAN PEDAGOGICAL UNIVERSITY
Support A1+!Yerevan Pedagogical University lecturers and students launched joint protest action Tuesday. The protest was designed to protect dismissed by Education Ministry rector and prevent the newly-appointed one from starting his work. Yesterday, a number of lecturers baring the University entrance didn’t let the new rector and Deputy Minister Ara Avetissyan to enter the building.
Today the University staff and students gathered before the Education Ministry and then moved to the University. Students demanded to restore former rector to his position and lecturers wanted to organise new elections for the post. They protested new nomination saying they are ready to cease studies from tomorrow.
One of the lecturers speaking at the rally blamed the Deputy Minister Ara Avetissyan for appointing his relative to the post.
Realising the importance of pre-election period the speaker however said in his speech that whole the University personnel approves Armenian president’s activity and will support his candidacy in upcoming presidential elections. To prove his statement the lecturer has even adopted Kocharyan’s stile of speaking. “We have to be real men to not let some stranger to come our home and state he is the head of the home”, the speaker said just in the president’s manner.
It’s worth to say, that Ara Avetisyan didn’t deny the allegation refusing however take it as accusation. The Ministry expressed its willingness to discuss the problem. The decision is likely to be reviewed.
Nevertheless, the students’ reaction shows they prefer to have some rest from studies.
