DISCUSSION OVER DEMOCRACY

Politics

“Armenia is accomplished a great deal in its advancing toward democracy. Our country has an advantage over Azerbaijan in that aspect”, said National Assembly Vice-Speaker Tigran Torossyan at today’s parliamentary session.

Presenting European Integration Commission’s report, Torossyan said serious works focused on CE commitments fulfilment had been done since last year September.

He blamed “some colleagues” for presenting their victory at PACE session as defeat and referring to a case when Azerbaijan delegation faced strong criticism from the CE for Azerbaijan’s failure to fulfil its commitments and was warned its activity in that structure is under threat of being frozen. “Aliev announced in his country that the republic’s position in the Council of Europe is strong enough”, Torossyan said.

He spoke also on elections noting that for building truly democratic society just and free elections are necessary.

MP Mekhak Mkhitaryan accused the CE of biased stance asking is there a country whose elections have been approved by the CE.

“Yes”, answered Torossyan and listed a number of countries. Georgia, however, wasn’t included in his list.
