AGASI YENOKYAN: SERGE SARGSSYAN OWERTHREW KOCHARYAN

Politics

Political analyst Agasi Yenokyan answered questions put to him Friday in an interview with our correspondent.

- What do you think about parliamentary election results?

- I think a coup was staged on May 25. Serge Sargssyan and Robert Kocharyan seized all power levers. That was not only Republicans’ victory but also triumph of all Sargssyan-controlled parties’ such as Orinats Erkir, United Labour and National Unity.

- The opposition has the common goal of ousting Kocharyan. Whether Serge Sargssyan’s success means that power moved to other hands?

- No, I don’t think so. Sargssyan’s sweeping victory is only one aspect of the matter while the other side of the coin is that Armenian people were completely stripped of legitimate power on May 25. There is no any legitimate body in the republic any more. Since the October 27 terrorist attack the parliament has been legitimate only formally but not actually, and beginning from the May 25 parliamentary elections it has become absolutely illegitimate.

- What is the composition of the newly elected parliament?

- In previous parliamentary elections prominent figures have won National Assembly’s seats and now criminals succeeded.

- If so, then what is ahead?

- I’m still optimistic about the future and hope that sooner or later power will be back to people.
