ARTAK SAHRADYAN: ARMENIA BECAME EU MEMBER THANKS TO JUST ELECTIONS

Politics

Presidential elections are to be held on February 19, 2003, and parliamentary ones are scheduled for May 25, 2003, the re-elected head of the Central Election Commission, Artak Sahradyan, announced today. He was unanimously re-elected as CEC chairman. Otherwise, the head of the CEC would be nominated within 3 days by government. Deputy Chairman Hamlet Abrahamyan and Secretary of the Commission Anna Alexsanyan were also elected at today extraordinary assembly.

Such a choice prompted discontent of Zaven Pluzyan, the appointed by “Law and Unity” fraction member of the Commission. “All the Commission leadership is pro-governmental and the opposition will not be able to play any role – 2003 elections will be held in the same way today election was held ”, Pluzyan said.

The member of National Democratic Union Pavel Edigaryan, who’s cast his vote in favour of the elected, doesn’t share his sentiments. “There weren’t more worthy candidates”, he says.

Artak Sahradyan says upcoming elections will run just the same way the 1999 ones did. He thinks Armenia managed to become EU member exactly because of the 1999 just elections.
