ARMENIAN WOMEN WANT TO INVADE POLITICAL FIELD

Armenian women decided to participate actively in upcoming elections in local self-governing bodies. They were working out the strategy of their entering in politics at the today seminar.

The “Women and Elections” clubs has been created yet a year ago. They function in 11 provinces of Armenia and aimed at providing support to female-candidates in all the elections. Armenian women are convinced that taking up leading posts they can achieve much more results than men and change the situation in political field for the better. They always thought they should be given special quotas for elections. Tigran Torosyan, the National Assembly Vice-Speaker, however, doesn’t share women opinion saying it would be too humiliating to them, as females not a bit weaker than males. “Fortunately, Armenian legislation makes no difference between the two sex in regard to elections or rights”, Torosyan says. He sticks to gender equality.

Vice-Speaker called current period of time landmark. “If presidential and parliamentary elections succeed, the authorities elected will make dramatic changes in Armenia within 3 to 5 years. In the opposite case, it isn’t ruled out, that Armenia will lose even today stability”, Torosyan says.
