People imprisoned after July events to be granted amnesty

On September 8, the Public Council held a sitting, which was presided over by its Chairman Vazgen Manukyan. The PC discussed the resignation of Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan, which became known earlier in the same day. The PC members stressed that the Pubic Council and Armenian Government cooperated effectively during Abrahamyan’s tenure of office. At the same time, they agreed with Abrahamyan that in the given economic and social situation, we need unified efforts by the government and society, as well as new approaches. The PC expressed hope that the new government will pay attention to priorities in its programme and the cooperation between the PC and the government will become even more effective. The sitting also focused on issues related to economy, military industry, health, education and culture. In this context, the PC members stressed the importance of traditional working meetings with the heads of various agencies and decided to orgnaise a meeting with the Minister of Education and Science in the near future. The Public Council members also discussed the issue of granting general amnesty on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Armenia’s Independence, which will also be offered to certain people held in custody after the July events in Armenia. After hearing different views and opinions on the issue, the PC members decided to discuss the issue at the next sitting.
