Nane Vardanyan, a 13-year-old swimmer of Armenian origin, won gold at the Armenian Adults Swimming Championship held at the Grand Sport Sports and Wellness Complex in Yerevan. In the complex swimming style, Nane came first with a result of 400 meters. Four years ago, Nane visited a swimming-pool for the first time to learn to swim but the coach immediately discovered her talent and urged her not to give up swimming. Nane studies in the 7th form at School N 177. She is an outstanding pupil. “It could not be otherwise,” she confesses. “My parents do not allow me to practise swimming unless I do my homework therefore I always try to combine my classes with swimming,” she says. The 13-year-old girl tries not to miss even a single swimming lesson for she wants to reach new heights. She dreams to participate in the Olympic Games. “It would be great if I came third in the Olympic Games.” The strict and demanding coach thinks it is too early to speak about new heights. “Nane is a hard-working girl with good techniques, but it is not enough. She also need perfect conditions and the right food. A swimming-pool is an expensive pleasure,” says Aram Kharatyan. The coach regrets that swimming does not receive due attention in Armenia. “I think the state is to allocate money to train the best swimmers and improve their skills. Besides, we need a swimming –pool that corresponds to the international standards.. ” Despite all difficulties on her way, Nane is determined to continue training to achieve her goal.
