Lyudmila Sargsyan: Society splits over each election (video)
The Armenian legislature continues discussing the final version of the draft Electoral Code. “Although the settlement of the Karabakh conflict remains the most important concern for us, we need to strengthen our back to record success in diplomacy. This, in turn, implies having a competent and competitive country. In this regard, we need not underestimate the role of elections,” Lyudmila Sargsyan, a member of the Armenian National Congress (HAK) faction, said during the discussions. She stressed that the main reason for Armenia’s failures is the lack of perfect electoral system; continually rigged elections undermine people’s confidence in electoral processes. “The society splits over electoral processes during each election and we witness a tense situation each time. Now that the tensions continue in the Karabakh conflict zone, more than ever we need to ensure national unity,” she said. Lyudmila Sargsyan expressed her dissatisfaction with the authorities, saying they have agreed with the opposition over several key issues offering incomplete solutions. It seems that the government dodges taking responsibility. They need to demonstrate political will and conduct free and fair elections. People should also demonstrate will and refuse to take bribes,” the HAK lawmaker said.
