Hayk Kyureghyan's lawyer file appeal with Court of Cassation
Mushegh Shushanyan, the lawyer of civil activist Hayk Kyureghyan, has lodged an appeal with the Court of Cassation requesting to annul the November 2015 decision of Criminal Court of Appeal which upheld the verdict of a lower court and recognize the violation of Kyureghyan’s rights. Hayk Kyureghyan is charged with hooliganism and using force against a representative of the state. He was detained following an incident that occurred on July 12, 2014 before a trial of opposition Tsekhakron Party leader Shant Haroutyunyan and his friends. Kyureghyan climbed atop a car in a court yard and shot an air pistol off several times in the direction of the police to protest the way political trials are handled in Armenia. In September 2015, Hayk Kyureghyan was sentenced to 9 years in prison.
