Venice Commission demands Vice-Speaker of Armenian Parliament be opposition rep (video)
The Venice Commission demands that the role of opposition be increased in Armenia and appoint an opposition representative Vice-Speaker of the National Assembly, Republican lawmaker Davit Petrosyan told reporters on Monday. “The planned constitutional amendments will answer a number of questions,” he said adding that the reforms are not carried out at the request of Russia. Political scientist Stepan Safaryan added that the acting Constitution will not allow the country to have independent courts, therefore reforms are urgent. “Otherwise, disputes will soon be resolved in the street and not in courts,” he said. “Levon Ter-Petrosyan is the godfather of this Constitution; therefore, I shall not be surprised if his Armenian National Congress abstains from the vote,” he added.
