While hundreds of thousands of Armenians, including public and political figures, are organizing different campaigns, candlelight vigils and protests to express their pain and sorrow over the death of military doctor Vahe Avetyan, the country's president, leader of the ruling Republican Party of Armenian (HHK) Serzh Sargsyan has not offered condolences to Avetyan's family or friends.
According to the president's website, Serzh Sargsyan left for Ukraine on Sunday to meet his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovych and watch Football World Cup. Ruben Hayrapteyan, an MP from the HHK and President of the Armenian Football Federation, is believed to be in Ukraine, too.
Yesterday we tried to know from Armenian President's Spokesman Armen Arzumanyan why Serzh Sargsyan had not condoled with the Avetyan family, but Arzumanyan did not answer our telephone calls. HHK spokesman and officials were not available either.
On June 17, Vahe Avetyan was beaten in Republican MP Ruben Hayrapetyan's Harsnakar Restaurant by a large group of restaurant employees and Hayrapetyan's personal bodyguards. he died in hospital 12 days later without regaining consciousness.
