As reported earlier, an incident took place at Republic Square in Yerevan which was hosting a concert organized by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK).
Several gas-filled balloons exploded at the square, injuring children and young people.
Initial reports blamed the explosion and the ensuing fire on a smoker lighting a cigarette near the balloons.
Despite the panic, Serzh Sargsyan went on to address thousands of people at the rally ahead of the Sunday vote.
The balloons were decorated with the governing Republican Party's slogan "let's believe in change".
