"Azerbaijan's initiative to present the resolution at the General Assembly is destructive and can seriously harm the peace negotiations," RA Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandyan announced today at Yerevan State University.
According to him, the majority of UN-member countries believe that these types of issues should not be moved to the General Assembly and must be discussed within the framework of established formats for negotiations. "That was the reason why only 39 of the 192 UN countries supported Azerbaijan's resolution in 2008 with the majority from the Islamic Conference organization. None of the five members of the Security Council voted for the resolution and the three Co-Chairing countries voted against it as well. Azerbaijan is using the Islamic Conference organization and the attempts to convey a religious nature to them are very dangerous."
"What do we foresee or what are we doing? During our last meeting, I compared our work to the major part of the iceberg which is unseen. There is no need to go into all the details of diplomacy. Rest assured that the government is taking all possible steps for a peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict through negotiations and based on the norms and principles of international law. One of the major principles is the right to self-determination which must help solve the most important issue, that is, the status of Nagorno-Karabakh", assured Nalbandyan.
Touching upon Armenian-Turkish relations, Edward Nalbandyan said: "There are rumors from the Turkish side according to which the diplomacy is "silent". During meetings, I am asked about that "silent diplomacy". Perhaps the Turks are holding silent discussions among themselves. I can say that Turkey has not taken any constructive step since October 10 last year. Let's see when the Turks will be ready or if they will be ready. Unlike the Turkish side, our words mean actions."
