The Democratic Party of Armenia (HDK) is ready to support Serzh Sargsyan if the latter decides to meet the party's demands, HDK Chairman Aram Sagsyan said on Feb. 25.
"We are not going to join the official runner up of the presidential election [Raffi Hovannisian] as he is going to introduce changes in the vector of the country's foreign policy," he said.
The HDK Chairman says the authorities were confident of their candidate's victory before the Feb. 18 vote.
"We repeatedly told the president that his team was casting a shade on him and the government was not fulfilling its obligations. I do not even know whose idea it was to raise the taxes levied from cabmen and dentists. People got frustrated and expressed their will," said Mr Sagsyan.
He says Raffi Hovannisian garnered a majority of votes especially in cities where the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) has a great influence.
"This discontent layer of the society can submit a serious bid to contest the forthcoming municipal election," he concluded.
