Despite the recent assassination attempt on presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan, the presidential candidates in Armenia do not consider their lives endangered and are not going to hire bodyguards.
Former Foreign Minister of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, presidential candidate Arman Melikyan believes that [as an Armenian citizen] his life is nor periled but if ‘the relevant bodies warn him against a pending danger and offer bodyguards, I am ready to discuss the issue with them.
Unlike Mr Melikyan, [Heritage Party Leader] Raffi Hovannisian and specialist of epic studies Vardan Sedrakyan exclude the possibility of keeping bodyguards, even if the police insist that it is done for security reasons.
Andrias Ghukasyan, another presidential candidate in the country who is staging hunger strike outside the National Academe of Sciences with a demand to end fake elections in Armenia, already has ‘bodyguards' in the person of police officers who are put on round-the-clock duty outside the NAS building.
