Presidential candidate starts hunger strike amid campaign

While the presidential candidates in Armenia are preparing for campaign rallies, political analyst Andrias Ghukasyan is staging a hunger strike outside the National Academy of Sciences.

The candidate decided to resort to a hunger strike after the Central Election Commission refused his demand to annul the registration of [incumbent president] Serzh Sargsyan as a candidate in the election by January 21 because, as Ghukasyan said, the ruling party and its candidate abuse their position in the state. Ghukasyan threatened to start a hunger strike unless his demand was met.

The candidate will stop the protest action on two conditions: the ruling party must either withdraw from the presidential race or announce that Armenia is not a democratic country.

Andrias Ghukasyan has brought with him some water and a copy-book to write his political analyses as he does not want to waste his time.
