Deputy Editor of "Haykakan Zhamanak" Daily, well-known journalist Hayk Gevorgyan was arrested on February 3.
The police officers' groundless explanations already go to show that the criminal case instigated against Hayk Gevorgyan is phony. In reality, Gevorgyan has been deprived of liberty for his professional activity, that is, for revealing the authorities' illegal acts and making them public.
The Armenian National Congress declares that Serzh Sargsyan's regime has once again challenged freedom of speech in Armenia. Being aware of the dangerous social and political processes, as well as the inevitable defeat of the ruling party in the upcoming elections, the regime has already started implementing the operation of neutralizing citizens and journalists, which strips the regime's anti-democratic nature. We call on the circles of Armenian and foreign journalists to express their joint protest in relation to Hayk Gevorgyan's arrest and we demand his immediate release.
