Today Russian President Dmitri Medvedev will begin his two-day official visit to Azerbaijan.
In Baku, Medvedev will mainly discuss bilateral trade-economic and military cooperation and partnership in the Caspian region, as reported by the Russian president's assistant Sergey Prikhodko.
Prikhodko mentioned that during the visit, the sides will sign an agreement on state borders, as well as an intergovernmental agreement on the rational use and maintenance of water resources of Samur River. Russia is actually the first country to sign a state border agreement with Azerbaijan.
On the first day of the visit, Medvedev will visit the alley of Shehids and will take part in the Azeri president's official dinner in honor of Medvedev. The two presidents will begin negotiations on September 3.
On that day, the sides will sign a number of agreements one of which is the agreement between Azerbaijan's state petrol organization and the Russian "GazProm". According to the agreement, Russia will expand Azeri gas purchases for 2011 and 2012.
Among international issues to be discussed during the Medvedev-Aliyev meeting will be the Karabakh conflict settlement and the issue of Iran.
The Russian "Ria Novosti" agency, according to the Kremlin's anonymous source, informs that the presidents will especially focus on the Karabakh conflict settlement.
As for the Armenian-Russian agreement on the presence of the Russian military base in Gyumri, the anonymous source said that Moscow is not planning to discuss that issue.
"That is, of course, if the Azeri side doesn't raise that issue. That agreement is on border maintenance and not on military-technical partnership. The major issue is not the military base, but the settlement of the Karabakh conflict," said the source.
Russian President Dmitri Medvedev will end his visit to Azerbaijan on September 3.
