RA Justice Minister Gevorg Danielian (from ruling Republican Party of Armenia) hasn't visited his former party member Sasun Mikaelyan.
During a conversation with A1+, the Minister said: "If I find it necessary, I shall visit Sasun in jail. I am not obliged to visit anyone. If Sasun wishes to see me, I shall find time for him."
In response to journalists' question whether Sasun Mikaelyan will be granted a pardon, the Justice Minister said: "He is being tried for acquiring weapons. I have been on good terms with Sasun, yet it doesn't mean, he must be acquitted."
Gevorg Danielian says Sasun Mikaelyan will receive an adequate response. "If the law decides that Sasun must be pardoned, he will be. Sasun Mikaelyan will be tried like all other ordinary people."
Mikaelyan was convicted in June of organizing "mass disturbances" in the wake of the February 2008 presidential election. He was also found guilty of illegal arms possession. The resulting eight-year sentence disqualified him from a general amnesty that led to the release of some 30 opposition members and supporters.
On September 12 the former parliamentarian was taken to the "Hospital for Convicts" with problems of respiratory tract and high blood pressure. Besides, has complained of more than 60 pieces of shrapnel in his body received during the Karabakh war.
Presently Sasun is in the Armenia Medical Centre where he has undergone a number of operations.
