Saakashvili selling Ajaria?

Former President of Georgia Eduard Shevardnadze views the permission to restore the "Azizie" mosques demolished in Ajaria in the 19th century as an "irreversible error".

This is what Shevardnadze said during an interview with the Asaval-Dasavali Weekly. Shevardnadze informed that the decision on restoring the mosques came after a joint discussion held by the Turkish and Georgian governments.

The former Georgian president mentioned that this decision could increase the Muslims' influence on Ajaria, reports "Gruzi Online".

The agreement that the Turkish and Georgian governments reached a month ago also envisages the restoration of the Georgian temples in Turkey.

This decision has led to criticism in Georgia, and the opposition blames Mikhail Saakashvili for "selling Ajaria to Turkey".

Shevardnadze says the "wise words" of Catholicos of All Georgia Ilya II are the only hope for getting out of this situation.
